Understanding Why Would Donald Trump be Impeached.

Updated: Nov 7, 2019

September 24, 2019: Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi announced that six committees would undertake formal impeachment inquiries after reports about controversial interactions between Trump and the country of Ukraine. Let’s take a step back and try to understand where it all started from. How a simple phone call with Ukraine’s newly elected President could lead to the deposition of the first world power’s President.

It started as a typical phone call between two world leaders: earlier in the year, Volodymyr Zelensky defeated the incumbent to become president of Ukraine, and now his political party has won the majority in parliament. On July 25th, Trump called Zelensky to congratulate him on his victory. The rough transcript of this phone call was released by the White House. It shows that Trump also took advantage of this call to ask for “A favor” but this favor is the core of the impeachment inquiry and what could lead to the end of his presidency.

A month before this call, US congress had approved $391 million in military aid to Ukraine to help defend against Russia. But Trump asked to withhold the money until he could talk to Zelensky.

In the first minutes of their conversation, we can see that Trump congratulates the newly elected president. But he quickly changes the subject and reminds Zelensky how the United States had already been generous to Ukraine throughout the year, and that USA never asked for anything back: “I wouldn’t say that it is reciprocal” Trump said. He literally meant that Ukraine owed him something. “We are ready to cooperate for the next steps,” Zelensky said, to what Trump answered: “I would like you to do us a favor though”, “There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son.”, “Whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great”, “If you can look into it… it sounds horrible to me”.

What we have to take into consideration is that at this time of the year, Joe Biden was leading by far in the Democrats primary campaign and he represented a huge threat to Trump’s re-election in 2020.

As a matter of fact, a poll from Fox News showed that on July 23rd, 2019, Biden was preferred by voters with 49% while Trump was only preferred by 39%.

The “Talks about Biden’s son” are from 2014 when Hunter Biden (Joe Biden’s son) took a comfortable job at Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company. At this time, the UK government asked the Ukraine Prosecutor General, Viktor Shokin to investigate Burisma’s boss, Mykola Zlochevsky for a money laundering case.

As Shokin ignored this case and Burisma’s owner was never prosecuted, different governments asked for his deposition, Joe Biden, as Vice-president of the United States was part of them.

Ex Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Viktor Shokin

But Trump had a different version, he said to Zelensky that Biden asked for Shokin's deposition to stop the investigation on his son’s company. Actually, the favor Trump was asking for, is proof that Biden asked for the Prosecutor General to be fired so that he could protect his son - which doesn’t even make sense because Shokin was fired in part for NOT investigating Burisma.

Newly elected Ukraine president Zelensky agreed and said that the next Prosecutor General will look into that situation.

Another problem was that this rough transcript of the phone call was put in a special classified archive. It led multiple White House Officials to alert the CIA about his call: “I have received information from multiple Government officials that the President of The United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 US election”

Meanwhile, a few days later, Trump released the $391 million to Ukraine.

There have been many Trump scandals during the last 3 years and this article is already way too long to talk about all of them so here’s a link to a 4-minute video where they compile all of his scandals:

But this one is so simple. He literally asked a foreign leader to interfere in the 2020 election. He used the power of his office in order to hold on to power. And this could be the scandal that will end his presidency if enough members of Congress believe it should…
